Rocca Maggiore (Major Fortress)
From Piazza San Rufino we walk down Porta Street - so we can admire the characteristic area called "Pertici". We arrive to the Porta (a gate) built in the medieval walls and from here, turning left, we walk in Perlici Street, up to the Rocca Maggiore.
The Rocca we see, built on a previous one, is dated back to 1367 and over the centuries it has lodged both militar and imperial garrisons (even Frederick II "red-beard" spent some time here) and later also papal garrisons have lodged here too.
A beautiful panorama of Assisi and Umbria compensates for the hard walk to get here.
